First section of book contains a brief account of circuit court cases, 1867-1868, and hustings court for Harrisonburg, 1869-1870. The remainder of the volume is a personal diary, 1871-1873. Judge Kenney describes the weather, local news, family events and some cases tried. There are occasional brief entries for national events. On July 4th 1871 he mentions giving a speech to a Negro audience and on September 27 mentions the humiliation of using former slaves as jurors. There is also a clipped obituary for his wife Sarah Ann Kenney who died of typhoid fever at the age of 41.
